Splace

I splashed a brush loaded with bleach across black paper and let it dry. Loading an ink pen with more bleach, I traced around every mark I could see. The outlines are brighter where a fresh pen-mark begins, fading as the bleach runs dry.

For me, these are meditative drawings both to make and to contemplate. The meticulous tracing opposes the offhand splash, and the bleaching of the paper gives the blackness both flatness as a real surface and depth as an inky field.

Negative times negative equals a positive. Absence leaves traces, and events emerge from the awareness of events, bringing to mind ideas of framing, symmetry and recursive loops.
